Types of scanning
Scanning is one of the most popular services. Scanned images are required to perform office work in commercial companies, teach students in colleges and for various other purposes in institutions of all kinds. Depending on the peculiarities of the original document, scanning can be done on different types of equipment with varied degrees of labor intensity. The price range of scanning services is rather wide and in each case depends on the type and difficulty of work, type and price of scanners and staff expertise.
The most time-consuming and expensive service is large-scale scanning. This type of scanning is applied to documents exceeding A3 in size. Such documents are impossible to digitize without special sheetfed scanners. Contemporary equipment allows for large-scale scanning both in black-and-white and color format. However, it is important to know that the original large-scale document must not be thicker than 18mm.
The main advantage of digitizing A1 and A2 documents on contemporary scanners is the high quality of digital documents, which allows us to use them in databases, process and study them. Large-scale scanning also provides us with digital versions of drafts and posters. Draft scanning provides an exact copy of the original document, as well as the ability to edit this file: change its size, scale it up and down, transform separate elements. Draft scanning is highly popular among students, draftsmen and constructors.
Document scanning takes considerably less time and is performed on flatbed or book scanners, which are also capable of scanning books, magazines and booklets. As a result, we get a PDF file that can be further transformed into a Microsoft Word or Microsoft Rich Text document. Not only can we retrieve the necessary information from the transformed digital files, but also edit them. While scanning important documents, it’s advisable to save their digital versions not only on PC, but also on removable media, such as CDs and DVDs.
Photo scanning is a type of scanning that allows us to digitize photos and transform them into digital images. To do that, photo scanners are used. Specialized contemporary equipment retains the sharpness of the original pictures while minimizing the number of distortions. While scanning low-quality of damaged photos, original images must be repeatedly digitized to reach an acceptable quality. The latest restoration technologies even enable the restoration of the original photo based on the digital file.
Microfilm and negative scanning is a separate type of scanning as well. The transformation of microfilm and negatives is accomplished on slide scanners that are capable of creating a high-resolution digital copy of the original file. Contemporary equipment is fitted out with special filters that improve the quality of the final digital file.
Depending on the type of scanning and the peculiarities of the original document, technicians choose specialized equipment that allows them to create a high-quality digital copy. However, document scanning must be performed only by skillful professionals, experienced in working with different scanner types and providing different kinds of services.
